Big Bang

The other day I dropped off all the kids at school and I was puttering around the house. Suddenly, I heard this really loud bang that shook the whole house. Windows rattled, the metal security door in front shook, even things on the shelves rattled. I thought for a minute something had hit my house.

When I looked out front, I realized that someone had smashed their car into the street lamp in the corner of my yard. Who knew a crash like that could cause a tremor of earthquake proportions?!?!

Since the girls were at school, I thought I'd take some pictures so they could see what happened. I thought I'd share them with you, as well. I found the process of replacing a street lamp very educational. One of those things you never thought about before but now find fascinating. Ha Ha

This is the car that hit the light pole. The passenger side front tire was shredded and he lost control of the vehicle.

Here is the bent light pole. It was pretty mangled at the base, so they had to replace it.
Excuse our dust. My dad and I were landscaping my front yard last spring. (I paid for it but he did the work. I love that distribution of work!) We installed a sprinkler system but decided to wait for cooler weather before laying sod.

Their crane wasn't available that day so they had to saw off the pole into manageable pieces.

All gone! They left the cone over the hole for several days and then brought a new light pole.

Here is the shiny new light pole. They strapped it to the crane to lift it.

Here we go....

They secured the top of the pole with this gripper to make sure it didn't tip over on them....or my house. I appreciated their precautions.

While one man worked the crane, the other guided the bottom of the pole into the hole they had dug.

Putting the pole into place and filling the hole with dirt.

Look! We have a pole....but no light.

Add a light fixture and everything is done.

Showing you how to change a street lamp makes me I feel a bit like Mr. Rogers. He always showed how to make peanutbutter or carboard boxes or something like that.

The new street lamp is much brighter than the old one. Our whole yard is lit up. I like it!
