Just over two years ago it was announced that a new LDS temple would be built in Phoenix. We stopped by the temple site last Sunday and took some photos and I found some other photos on the Phoenix Temple website. The temple should be completed sometime in 2013.
Shovels for Groundbreaking Ceremony June 4
The Church broadcast the talks before the groundbreaking and also the actual digging. We saw our stake president dig a shovelful of dirt. Very exciting!
President Monson's daughter and her family participated in the groundbreaking ceremony. Her son lives within the temple district.

Aerial view of temple lot
There is a fence around the temple construction site but visitors can see the site through the chain link fence from the north parking lot. The temple website stated that in July 2011 workers were moving dirt in preparation for below-grade work.
We saw a circular mound of dirt on the lot where the temple will stand. I cannot tell if that means they have finished the below-ground work or not.

We're going to go back periodically and watch the temple rise. The girls are already excited to attend the open house and dedication ceremony. I hope by watching the construction of the temple that they will come to love it and set a goal to be worthy to enter this temple one day.
