Many people have asked how Heather's watermelon plants are doing. I am happy to report that the watermelons are alive and doing well. We hope that we will soon be able to eat homegrown watermelons!
This is the "little" gourd-shaped melon I posted on Sept 10. It has certainly grown!
Heather has her hand on the gourd-shaped melon to show how big it got.
We also found a SECOND gourd-shaped melon along the front border of the flowerbed.
We also found TWO good-sized oval melons right outside our front door.
The leaves are so big and so dense that they easily cover the melons. We really have to dig to find them. You can't see it very well, but Heather has her hand in front of a leaf and the leaf is bigger than her hand.
Although Grandpa trims the watermelon plant back each week when he mows our lawn, it has still taken over nearly half of our front flowerbed. The other day a friend from church asked me what kind of fern I had growing in my front yard. She said it was beautiful. Ha Ha She was quite surprised when I explained that it is a watermelon plant!
Here is the difference 10 days makes for a watermelon.
This is the growth in 1 month. On Aug 17 the plant only went to the second pole. Now it is nearly to the fourth pole. Grandma K said next year Heather should plant seeds all along the front instead of all in one place.
With the drier autumn weather, the watermelons are not turning moldy and seem to be flourishing. We are watching closely so we can protect them and hopefully eat them.
