When I got married, someone gave us a Honeymoon Basket that contained a CD of love songs, a bottle of Martinelli's sparkling cide, two champagne flutes, and a silver silk rose. It was a pre-packaged basket, but we liked it. It was one of the few gifts we received that was truly "just for fun."
Not long afterwards, some friends got married. We decided to make our own version of the Honeymoon Basket for our friends. They loved it, too. Since then, I have made probably 40 Honeymoon Baskets. Each one is different as we try to match the personalities and tastes of the bride and groom, their favorite colors, the items we find on sale, etc.
Tonight Emily and I attended a wedding reception for a young lady in our stake. She is about 5 years older than Emily but was always very gracious, offering kindness, support and encouragement at the exact moment that Emily needed it. It made a very strong impression on Emily so she really wanted to do something nice for the bride. She decided we needed to make her a Honeymoon Basket.
Emily had no idea where to start so I had her make a list:
- CD of appropriate love songs (Target and Walmart usually have them)
- Martinelli's sparkling cider
- 2 champagne flutes
- fancy crackers, chocolates, cookies, etc., preferably in coordinating colors
- Hugs and Kisses
- 2 cloth napkins
- a large, sturdy basket (thrift stores usually have them for about $2 vs. $20 at Michael's)
- confetti (I have hearts, wedding bells, "I Love You" shapes, etc.)
- irridescent shred (to put in the flutes)
- shrink wrap bag
You can put grocery bags or paper shred in the bottom of the basket. It helps to get hte items in the basket to maintain their position if they have something flexible underneath supporting them. Cover the base support with the cloth napkins. Drape the corners over the edges to look pretty.
Arrange the sparkling cider, champagne flutes, crackers, fancy candy, etc., in an attractive way. Scatter Hugs and Kisses around everything and then sprinkle with confetti.
Cover the filled and decorated basket with the shrink wrap bag. Shrink the bag using the highest heat setting on your hair dryer. Tape the bottom pieces in place under the basket if necessary.
Below are photos of the Honeymoon Basket we made today.
